The social importance of plant breeding in Germany

The paper describes the challenges of a globalized world and the changes in world agriculture. It analyzes the impact of plant breeding on social welfare, food security and the protection of climate and resources. For the first time, climate effects of an increased productivity are assessed in terms of quantity and efficiency. The study concludes that the social importance of plant breeding will increase as food security must be secured and the rising demand for agricultural resources for non food use must be met.
